Baptism

What is Baptism? Baptism is a sacramental seal acknowledging our welcome into and acceptance of Christian life. In the United Church of Canada, baptism is one of the two sacraments that we celebrate, along with Holy Communion.

At Wasaga Beach United Church, we baptize any who come to us seeking this sacrament, regardless of church association. Baptism is not a requirement for God's love. We believe people who live or die without baptism are in no way condemned, lost, or damned.

How do I arrange a Baptism? The first step is to meet with Rev. Jeff Werner. He will go over the sacrament of baptism for you or your child. The minister goes over the theology of baptism, the scriptures around it, Jesus baptism as well as their obligation as parents to raise their child or themselves in the Christian faith.

Do I have to be a member of Wasaga Beach United Church? No, you do not need to be a member of Wasaga Beach United Church to have a baptism.

My partner and I are not both practicing Christians is that OK? Yes. Both parents do not have to be practicing Christians to have your child baptized in our Church.

Is there a charge for the baptismal ceremony? No, the baptismal ceremony is free of charge.

What should I expect during the baptism ceremony? Baptisms normally take place during our regular Sunday morning service, witnessed by our full congregation. This is important, because during the ceremony, the congregation makes a promise to the person being baptised to support that person in his or her spiritual growth.

How long is the Ceremony? The ceremony takes a little more than five minutes, and includes: Welcoming to the front of the church during service, Anointing with water Praying for the newly baptized, and Presenting the newly baptized to the Congregation.

Is there a Certificate? The person being baptized will receive a Baptismal Certificate to mark the celebration and it will be recorded in our Baptismal Registry.

May I invite my family and friends? You can invite as many people as you like to the celebration of baptism. Our sanctuary is large and welcoming.

Do you perform baptisms for adults? Yes, as a United Church, our tradition embraces baptism for people of any age, from infants to elders.

We are a same-sex couple. Will you baptize our child? Yes, Wasaga Beach United is an all inclusive church and we welcome all people regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, cultural, economic, and social background.
